Having done a temporary geographical dislocation to the frozen northlands where there are no tower blocks to haunt his dreams, your less-than-humble but nonetheless devoted servant has re-established the sacred connections between himself, the land and nature… Communing with his gods on hilltop valhallas where there is no horizon, just a pale penumbra where earth meets sky. Here I look down on passing military helicopters and the voices of my ancestors are audible on the wind.Once I had overcome the separation anxiety that these climes induce in a pussy city boy, I found myself considering the role of the human species in terms of nature and of the planet, rather than of itself. This led to a realisation, a “satori”, if you will, that there is only one entirely disposable resource on this planet, and that is the human species. This is the case, irrespective of our wanton overpopulation. As top predator, the human species is unique in that nothing depends on us for food (save the animals parasitic to us), and nothing depends on us for population control via natural predation. Nature has all these bases covered independently of ourselves. In contrast, the so-called “lower” echelons are all entirely mutually dependent, and seem to grow in importance the lower they rate in human terms... As I understand it, it is these creatures - the sandeels, arthropods (krill and the like), down to the gastropods, nematodes, flatworms and roundworms that it seems the ecology of the planet hinges upon… These are the canaries in our coalmine. This holds true
when considered (in true macro/microcosmic tradition) in terms of, and
in its correlation to, the way the drug (heroin in particular, but the
analogy holds wherever you hang it) industry operates. The only indispensible strata of the junk/drug pyramid is the bottom line addict, for as long as they exist someone will step in to service their need. As ever nature's law of tooth and claw is directly mirrored in all forms of human activity. As above, so below. Take care and take control, Dok O. |
Afterword: Dr Otter bemoans in no gentle terms that "speaking of nematodes and gastropods... Black Poppy, that organ of placation, has used my previous article as a reason to cut all ties with SW… No reply/retort... Not so much as a fuck you..." and so on, descending to great depths of verbal abusiveness towards the end of the email...
